Our Equine Programs

Maryland is home to nearly 100,000 horses, more than any other state, per square mile. Maryland truly is the heart of horse country. Horses truly are at the heart of February Star Sanctuary. We rescue horses of all breeds, with a strong focus on Off-Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) transitioning into second careers. We are committed to ethical aftercare, structured retraining and responsible placement. February Star Sanctuary is accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, a Petco Love Partner and an Equus Guardian.

Every Horse Has A Story

Some horses arrive from difficult circumstances. Others come from deeply loving owners who, due to life changes, health challenges, relocation, or financial hardship, want to ensure their horse receives a new beginning. That’s where February Star Sanctuary comes in. Surrendering a horse is often an act of love and responsibility. We honor that trust.

Whether a horse needs rehabilitation, retraining, companion placement, or a carefully matched adopter, we strive to ensure their transition is thoughtful, ethical and permanent. If an adopted horse’s circumstances change, they must be returned to our sanctuary.
