Thoroughbred Restarts and Retraining
In 2025, February Star Sanctuary became an officially accredited organization with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. We are proud to have this distinction and recognition as an organization dedicated to providing the best care to all thoroughbreds, including retired racehorses and competition horses. Each year, a high percentage of the horses at our sanctuary are thoroughbreds. The thoroughbreds we rescue vary greatly in age, background and abilities. After all rehabilitation needs are met, thoroughbreds that are able to be adopted out participate in our retraining program for a chance at a fulfilling second career. As with our other adoptable horses, thoroughbreds are evaluated for which discipline(s) and style(s) they are most likely to succeed in and receive customized training to meet their needs. Our thoroughbred retraining graduates have achieved success in various second careers including western, eventing, hunter/jumper, leadline, lessons, therapy, mounted games. Thoroughbreds that are not able to be adopted out, happily live out their days with our other sanctuary residents.
